After 7 years of playing Wurmonline this is my review.
Negative points:
No discussion is allowed in any way, shape, or form on real religion, either in game or in the forum. (Leave God at the log in door, he's not welcome in Wurm.)
You may not mention God even in your signature line, post any image that might be mistaken for Jesus/Christ or have a hint of religion in the image. (Unless of course you are a Forum moderator that has an image that resembles the devil or satan. Click the link to see what I mean highlighted above. I bet his parents are real proud, who knows, maybe they really are.)
You may not even write in the forums on Easter "Happy Resurrection Day" While you may say "Happy Easter".
In Wurm and on the forum, there is high promotion on the in game false gods religion system. Wurm staff has double standards on what religion is.
(For me as a Christian, I find this offensive, as I'm sure God does as well.)
It takes 1 to 2 hours for a GM to respond to a support call in game. At times, much longer.
After over 126 posts and 10 days time, about connection problems in one thread, not one Wurm staff member responded in the forum Technical issue section.
The crafting system is better than it was, but still cludgy. Every single action has a timer, and the timers are lengthy. You spend up to 99% of your time waiting for the timer to run down instead of actually doing anything. Wurm is about wasting as much of your time as possible with pathetically slow returns. Example: At 41 ship building skill, with parts already made, it took me 5 days at 6 to 8 hours a day to build a Knarr.
When it comes down to it, the crafting is all text based tables. It is b o r i n g!
You get loads of fails (more wasted time) while crafting.
Game improvements or updates are slow, as in years. One example: Bridges have been in the works for several years, literally.
There is now a strict no refund or compensation policy, even if the fault lies with Wurm glitches, which are several and often. One possible exception on refunds or compensation, you might get something if you know someone "high up" wink wink. I have no proof the aforementioned happens, but I have my suspicions.
Large crates still have a bug which is not fixed, many weeks after large crates have been introduced into the game.
Creature count on some servers appear high, while on other servers it appears low. Actually the count is supposedly the same, but larger servers spread out the creature population a lot. If you like to hunt, then the Indepedence server is not for you. If you like peace and quiet, then Indy is for you.
Although there is a free to play option, Wurm is set up so free to play is not really viable. If you don't log in your free to play character after 30 days it gets removed and you have to make a new one.
While many argue in favor of Wurms pricing, the costs are actually much higher than many online games. To play and s l o w l y gain skill above 20 you need premium time. That costs 16 euros (10 silver). To buy a settlement form costs another 16 euros (10 silver). Then you need armor and weapons and tools that are not noob 10ql junk. Good equipment in game is not cheap. Medium level equipment can be fair priced, or sometimes free. You also need at least 1 templar (spirit guard) which costs 2 silver to hire, and 1 silver per month, per templar.
Yes you can possibly join a village and maybe get some free mid level equipment, but you are limited in what you can do when someone else is footing the bill for your protection. Forget tree chopping, at least on deed in safety.
Many people opt to watch a movie for actual entertainment while playing Wurm. Seriously....
The economic system in Wurm is way out of balance. New to mid level players stand little chance of making coin. Their options? Dig and sell dirt, make bricks, make mortar, and then try to find a buyer. Mind you, new players action timers are much much longer than a mid to high level player.
The PRO point or 2.
Wurm does run and play on my 2 GB ram windows XP PC.
Wurm does not currently need real low latency to play.
So with all the cons mentioned above, why have I played this game for so long? That is a very good question. When will I quit? Probably very very soon. I can find no resolution to continue supporting a game and forum that requires me to turn my back on God. Whether Wurm staff wants God there or not, I got news for them. He is watching.
